Abstract

This study examines the concept of gotong royong (mutual cooperation) in the Sida tradition of the Manggarai community through Gabriel Marcel's philosophical concept of communion. The Sida tradition is a cultural heritage that strengthens kinship ties between Anak wina and Anak rona through customary ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, and thanksgiving events. However, its practice has shifted in meaning from mutual cooperation to financial transactions that impose burdens and trigger conflicts. This qualitative research employs in-depth interviews with customary elders and comparative literature studies. Data analysis uses the four foundations of relational interpretation proposed by Armada Riyanto-the Self, the Text, the Other, and the Phenomenon-and dialogues with Gabriel Marcel's concept of communion, which emphasizes presence, intersubjectivity, participation, and hope. The findings reveal that gotong royong in the Sida tradition rests on three pillars of unity-ca imbi (one belief), ca dara (one blood), and ca tara (one humanity)-as the basis of communal life among the Manggarai people. Marcel's concept of communion expresses love through authentic presence and intersubjective relations, aligning with the fundamental spirit of Sida. A new model of gotong royong based on love emerges through the call of the heart, disponibility (availability), self-commitment, and creative fidelity. The Sida tradition shares fundamental commonalities with Gabriel Marcel's concept of communion. This study affirms the importance of revitalizing Sida as an agent of gotong royong that fosters harmony with fellow human beings, nature, and God.
